…Inside his Legacy of Honours
By Our Reporters
Some business leaders build companies. Others build industries. A rare few build people. Tim Akano belongs unmistakably to the last category.
For more than three decades, Timothy Olukayode Akano has dedicated his life to a mission far greater than personal success: equipping millions of Africans with the digital skills, leadership capacity and entrepreneurial mindset needed to compete in a rapidly changing world. The result is an extraordinary legacy reflected not merely in the more than 200 awards and recognitions that line his walls, but in the millions of lives transformed through his vision.

The plaques tell one story. The people tell another.
Behind every award is a deliberate investment in education, youth empowerment, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital transformation, philanthropy and nation-building. Together, they explain why organizations ranging from universities and professional bodies to international institutions, governments, youth associations and global technology companies continue to honour Tim Akano as one of Nigeria’s most impactful business leaders. His journey demonstrates that the greatest recognition comes not from collecting awards but from creating value that compels others to celebrate it.
More Than an Entrepreneur
Today, Tim Akano is widely recognized as one of Africa’s foremost advocates of Artificial Intelligence adoption and digital transformation. As Founder and Chief Executive Officer of New Horizons Nigeria, he has transformed what began in 2005 as a bold entrepreneurial gamble into Nigeria’s largest ICT training institution and one of Africa’s leading digital capacity-building organizations. But entrepreneurship represents only one dimension of his influence.

He is an investor, author, mentor, philanthropist, career coach, public speaker and President of One Africa Initiatives, while also serving as Chairman of FABAAW (For Africa By All Africans Worldwide), a youth-focused digital platform connecting young Africans across more than fifty countries through leadership, entrepreneurship, investment education, governance, career coaching and technology.
These multiple roles explain why his awards span education, innovation, leadership, humanitarian service, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship and national development.

The Corporate Foundation That Built an Award Winner
Long before becoming one of Nigeria’s most celebrated entrepreneurs, Tim Akano distinguished himself within multinational corporations. His career traversed Unilever, Debis Computers, Dunlop and ultimately the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), where he held leadership positions across marketing, sales, strategic planning, production and general management.
His defining corporate achievement came in 2001 when, as Plant Manager in Ilorin, he received the North America & West Africa Division President’s Award (Silver Category) after leading operations responsible for generating more than ₦30 billion in revenue for NBC’s Lagos/North Division. The accomplishment earned another prestigious recognition: selection among Coca-Cola’s “50 Future World Leaders.” Those early honours established the leadership reputation that would later flourish in entrepreneurship.
The Defining Gamble
In 2005, while many executives would have chosen security, Tim Akano chose uncertainty. He resigned from a successful multinational career to establish New Horizons Nigeria. The decision was driven by one conviction: Africa could not compete globally without massive investment in digital skills.

What appeared risky then now looks visionary.
Today New Horizons Nigeria:
- operates as Nigeria’s largest ICT training institution;
- partners with more than 25 universities and over 150 secondary schools;
- trains over 100,000 students annually;
- provides scholarships and subsidized ICT education to approximately 20,000 students, youths and NYSC members every year;
- employs more than 350 professionals;
- remains one of Africa’s leading centres for digital certifications.
This remarkable transformation forms the foundation upon which many of his awards have been built.
Why So Many Awards?
Examining over two hundred honours received by Tim Akano reveals consistent themes rather than isolated achievements. Virtually every award recognizes one or more of six defining contributions:
1. Youth Empowerment
Organizations across Nigeria continue to honour him because thousands of young Nigerians have accessed digital education, scholarships, mentorship and career opportunities through his initiatives.
Awards reflecting this include:
- Youth Empowerment Icon of the Year
- Nigerian Icon of Youth Empowerment
- Champion of Youth Empowerment
- Top 10 Champions of Youth Empowerment
- Outstanding Mentorship Award
- Humanitarian Pillar Award
- Youth Employability Awards
- National Impact Awards
These recognitions acknowledge decades spent preparing Nigerian youths for the digital economy.
2. Digital Education
Long before Artificial Intelligence became fashionable, Tim Akano advocated digital literacy as the new foundation of economic development. His leadership transformed New Horizons into one of Africa’s foremost ICT education brands.
Among the recognitions earned are:
- Africa’s Learning Powerhouse of the Decade
- Africa’s Most Innovative IT Training & Certification Brand
- Best ICT Training Academy
- ICT Training Academy of the Year
- Outstanding IT Capacity Development Centre
- Chief Educator of the Year
- ICT Personality of the Year
These awards reflect sustained excellence rather than isolated accomplishments.
3. Artificial Intelligence Leadership
Today Tim Akano is recognized as one of Africa’s leading AI evangelists. He has consistently advocated integrating Artificial Intelligence into Nigeria’s educational curriculum while training institutions, professionals and young people for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. His lectures, publications, institutional partnerships and nationwide advocacy have positioned him among the continent’s leading voices on AI-driven education.
4. Cybersecurity Leadership
One of his most enduring contributions is pioneering Africa’s World Cyber Security Conference. The conference became one of the continent’s earliest platforms for discussing digital security. Its impact extended beyond dialogue.
The 2012 edition, organized alongside Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, contributed to Nigeria’s eventual emergence as the Regional Centre for Cyber Security in Africa under ITU-IMPACT. The conference has hosted international leaders, including former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Awards from the Defence Headquarters, Nigerian Communications Commission and multiple ICT organizations reflect this pioneering work.

5. Humanitarian Impact
Tim Akano’s influence extends beyond technology. Through the Tim Akano Foundation, he has invested heavily in community development.
Among notable interventions:
- adoption and rehabilitation of Baptist Day School, Oluponna;
- provision of boreholes, sanitation facilities and perimeter fencing;
- educational materials for every pupil;
- uniforms for hundreds of schoolchildren;
- scholarships for university students;
- digital empowerment programmes for visually impaired Nigerians.
In 2026, he launched the ambitious Almajiri-to-Tech Empowerment Scheme, designed to transition vulnerable children into structured digital education.
Such interventions explain awards including:
- Humanitarian Service Award
- Humanitarian Pillar Award
- Beacon of Hope for African Development
- Vanguard of Societal and Human Emancipation
- National Patriotic Personality Award
Recognition Across Every Sector
One remarkable feature of Tim Akano’s awards is their diversity. Unlike many leaders recognized only within business circles, his honours come from virtually every segment of society.
These include:
- Federal Government institutions
- universities
- professional associations
- technology companies
- international organizations
- student bodies
- youth organizations
- traditional institutions
- religious organizations
- civil society groups

This breadth demonstrates that his impact transcends industries.

Beyond Awards: Building a Generation
Perhaps Tim Akano’s greatest achievement cannot be measured by plaques. Thousands of his mentees now occupy leadership positions in multinational corporations. Many have established technology companies across Africa, Europe and North America. Others work in Silicon Valley. Countless more entered the workforce because scholarships or subsidized ICT education made professional training accessible. His weekly publications, lectures and career development initiatives continue shaping conversations around education, innovation, AI, leadership, governance and Africa’s future.
The Philosophy Behind the Recognition
Those who know Tim Akano often point to one defining characteristic. Awards have never been his destination. They have been by-products. Throughout his career, he has consistently maintained that his greatest satisfaction comes from seeing young people succeed. That philosophy explains why the recognitions continue to multiply. Organizations honour outcomes. Communities honour impact. Institutions honour consistency. Young people honour those who open doors.
The Legacy Still Being Written
For many business leaders, awards become a celebration of completed careers. For Tim Akano, they appear to mark milestones in an unfinished journey. As Artificial Intelligence reshapes global economies, he continues advocating curriculum reform, digital literacy and technology-driven education. His latest initiatives—including AI integration into Nigerian education, expanded university partnerships and the Almajiri-to-Tech Empowerment Scheme—suggest that his most impactful work may still lie ahead.
In an era when recognition is often measured by social media visibility, Tim Akano offers a different model of influence: one built patiently through decades of service, innovation, mentorship and institution-building. The more than 200 plaques adorning his shelves are impressive. But they are not the true story.
The real story is written in classrooms transformed by technology, communities empowered through philanthropy, professionals equipped with globally relevant skills and millions of young Africans inspired to believe that the future belongs to those prepared to build it. That is the journey behind the plaques. And that is why Tim Akano stands today as one of Nigeria’s most decorated—and unquestionably one of its most impactful—business leaders.
