The Top10 Magazine Man of the year and Excellence Awards 2025

Introduction

How time flies. It’s 10 months already that the crème of the Nigerian society converged on Abuja for the 2024 version – the ninth edition – of The Top10 Magazine’s Man of the Year and Annual Excellence Awards. The event was pushed to 2025 by unavoidable external circumstances. That we are here today for the 2025 edition in the year of the awards is evidence that there has been a positive reset.

The 2025 Man of the Year and Annual Excellence Awards is significant for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is the second time we are hosting the event twice within one calendar year. Secondly, the Man of the Year component is ten years old this month – two months before the 10th anniversary of the magazine itself which comes up in February 2026. The magazine was 10 months old when the Award was instituted. Thirdly, This edition also marks the 5th anniversary of The Top10 Annual Excellence Awards.

Sustaining both the publication and the Man of the Year Award for a decade, and the Annual Excellence Awards for five years are, no doubt, milestone achievements worth celebrating.

At its inception, the Man of the Year Award was a nominal selection and recognition of one outstanding individual who distinguished himself or herself by impacting greatly on society in the year under review. The recognition and celebration of the awardee consisted only of the publication of his profile in the magazine highlighting the antecedents and outstanding accomplishments that stood him out. That was the case until 2021 when the publication introduced The Top10 Magazine Excellence Awards, conceived to be an annual event to celebrate and honour outstanding personalities and organizations that have made the difference in various endeavours in Nigeria and beyond. The objective is to celebrate and reward excellence in line with the core value of the magazine which is to celebrate individuals and organizations that represent excellence in the various sectors of the Nigerian society.

The Annual Excellence Awards came with the introduction of a physical award ceremony where honourees were presented with plaques as a physical testimony to excellence and distinction. In the upgraded celebration format, the Man of the Year Award, of course, has continued to remain the high point of the annual event.

In line with our tradition of thoroughness, the winners of the Awards this year emerged after a rigorous process of selection from among many other equally prominent and outstanding nominees across the various categories. The exercise, as usual, involved various stages of screening. Also, like in the previous years, apart from the Man of Year and Woman of the Year, the award categories remain dynamic – in 2025, new and different categories emerged from different areas of endeavour where we found excellence worthy of celebration.

As usual, we are sustaining our national, international and gender spread with more awards coming from the north, and one coming from the diaspora, even though the awards are not based on quota. In the Excellence Awards section, the number of women dropped drastically from 8 out of 19 last year, to five out of 29, drawn from both government and non-governmental settings. The private sector continues its dominance of the Awards, producing 19 out of 29 award winners. It also produced the Winner of the Man of the Year, taking over from the public sector took away this award in the last two editions. The public sector, however, snatched the Woman of the Year award, which was won by the private sector when this category was introduced in 2024 edition.

The winner of The Top10 Magazine’s 2025 Man of the Year Award, Alhaji NasiruHaladu Danu OFR, joins a club of distinguished Nigerians who have won the crown since the inception of the award 10 years ago, with Dr. Herbert Wigwe, the late Group Managing Director of Access Bank, as the pioneer winner of the award in 2016. From the Editor-in-Chief
A Decade of Celebrating Excellence

It feels like just yesterday when, ten years ago, the first edition of the annual Top10 Magazine Man of the Year and Excellence Awards made its debut into the Nigerian events calendar. We entered the Nigerian events ecosystem with a fresh vision: to promote excellence and to celebrate the individuals and organizations that embody the highest standards across various sectors of society in line with the core value of our publication. At the time, many doubted we would survive, given the saturated media and events landscape. But here we are, a decade later, proudly marking the 10th anniversary of the annual awards, and still serving our core mission—celebrating excellence in all its forms.

In that inaugural year, we first launched The Top10 Magazine Man of the Year award, conceived as a tribute to individuals with extraordinary achievements. The first recipient of this prestigious honor was the late Herbert Wigwe, then Group Managing Director of Access Bank. May his soul rest in peace. Over time, we expanded this concept into the Top10 Excellence Awards, a platform dedicated to honoring outstanding figures and organizations that set themselves apart in both public and private sectors.

As we reflect on ten incredible years, we give thanks to God for His grace and guidance. Despite the challenges, The Top10 Magazine has risen to become a key player in Nigeria’s media landscape. We’ve evolved beyond print, and today, we’re a recognized platform for promoting and celebrating excellence, not just through our issues, but also through our iconic award events.

This 10th edition is particularly special. It’s more than just another awards issue; it is a celebration of a decade of excellence. As always, we take pride in sharing the inspiring stories of our award recipients—their remarkable journeys, their vision, and their dedication to making a difference. We promise that every edition of our Man of the Year and Excellence Awards will be unique, reflecting our commitment to spotlighting the finest achievements that set the bar for others.

As is customary, we subjected every nominee to an exhaustive screening process, ensuring that only the most deserving individuals and organizations made the final cut. The quality of this year’s honorees speaks volumes about the rigorous selection process, and we trust that you will agree that our panel has once again done an exceptional job in identifying the very best across various fields.

Once again, we are combining the Man of the Year and Excellence Awards ceremonies into one grand event, as we believe it creates a more impactful celebration of achievement. We are also proud to continue with the new award category, the Woman of the Year, which was introduced last year to balance the representation of excellence across genders and honor the incredible contributions of women to Nigeria’s progress.

This year’s event is again being held in Abuja, following the success of the 2023 and 2024 editions. Staging the awards in the Federal Capital gives a fresh audience the opportunity to witness the prestige and grandeur of the event, while also providing new value to our readers and advertisers by showcasing excellence from all corners of society.

As we celebrate this monumental 10th anniversary of the annual awards, we reflect on how far we’ve come, but also on how much more there is to achieve. This special edition not only captures the essence of excellence but also marks a key milestone in The Top10 Magazine’s journey—a journey we are proud to share with all of you.

ALHAJI NASIRU HALADU DANU OFR, Sardaunan Dutse/Tafida Babban Daura
Man of the Year, 2025

Alhaji Nasiru Haladu Danu OFR  is one of the few Nigerian businessmen who enjoy widespread goodwill due to their untainted character and impeccable reputation. The Chairman and CEO of Casiva Limited is renowned for his unwavering commitment to success. He consistently strikes gold in every venture he undertakes, solidifying his status as a true titan of industry. The Sardaunan Dutse, possesses an intimate understanding of the oil and gas sector, navigating its complexities with the expertise that comes from years of experience.

Over the years, Alhaji Danu has brushed aside life’s challenges, remaining undeterred, resilient and determined to forge ahead – virtues instilled in him by his parents. All his life, Danu has adhered strictly to the principles of hard work and perseverance, which have become the cornerstone of his success. Today, the fruits of his labour are evident, as he stands at the pinnacle of both the business and political arenas, He served as member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

As the Sardaunan Dutse of the Dutse Emirate in Jigawa State, Danu wields considerable influence but prefers to maintain a low profile, shunning unnecessary media attention. Those who know him closely compare his stature in Nigeria’s business community to the likes of renowned African business leaders like Aliko Dangote, the Group Chairman of Dangote Group Plc; and Tony Elumelu, Chairman Heirs Holdings, Transcorp and Tony Elumelu Foundation. This comparison, even if arguable, speaks to his level of humility and self evasiveness.

Alhaji Danu’s focus remains steadfast on growing his businesses and making a positive impact on the lives of those around him. His foray into the business world began as far back as 1985 when he joined LR Group, now known as HLSI Security Systems and Technologies, a company owned by Israeli based Mitrelli Group and part of Mitrelli’s security branch. Alhaji Danu is now the Chairman of the HLSI, although he is better identified with his flagship company, Casiva Limited, a major player in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Alhaji Danu’s other active business and community involvements include: NHD Interbiz Projects Limited, a construction and civil engineering company; Chairman, NHD Farms Ltd; Chairman, Lubrik Construction Company; Chairman, Yenagoa Polo Club; Chairman, Nigerian Army Polo Resort; member, Board of Trustee, and Nigerian Army Polo Club.

Alhaji Danu’s financial success in business and other endeavours earned him a place among 100 Most Influential Nigerians in 2017. This influence was especially evident during his wedding ceremony in august 2017 in Abuja, an event that attracted numerous high-profile guests, effectively shutting down the city as dignitaries flew in from across the nation, causing both air and road traffic congestion. Similarly, his turbaning as Dan Amana Dutse in the same year was a gathering of illustrious personalities, a sort of who-is-who-in-Nigeria, highlighting his esteemed status and connections within the community and beyond.

In addition to his business endeavours, Danu’s philanthropic spirit is legendary. He believes in the Islamic precept that charity is more than a transaction but an act of worship, a means of purifying wealth and soul; that charity does not decrease wealth, for every dime spent for the sake of Allah carries unimaginable rewards. This belief influenced Alhaji Danu to establish Nasiru Haladu Danu Foundation, which seeks to uplift the downtrodden and provide essential services to the underserved.

The NHD Foundation has been instrumental in implementing various initiatives that have positively impacted the lives thousands of individuals. He has commissioned several life-changing projects in his hometown of Dutse, Jigawa State, including the construction of a palace for the District Head, the Late Haladu Danu Mosque, and a fully equipped Islamic school. Furthermore, he provided a solar-powered portable drinking water facility, valued at over a hundred million naira, to meet one of the community’s basic needs.

Other notable philanthropic projects executed by NHD Foundation include: Providing support to various security outfits; Organizing a medical outreach programme in Jigawa where medical doctors from the United States of America provided healthcare services to 5,000 people; Providing sustenance to 500 students at the Abuja and Dutse University throughout the month of Ramadan, exemplifying dedication to supporting vulnerable populations; Contributing N50 million towards the construction of the Gomai Nation Development Centre in Plateau State, a hub designed to foster knowledge, entertainment, and entrepreneurship; donate  N50m to ZMB homes to construct classrooms for out-of-school children; donation of antenatal care pack to less privileged at Police Hospital and National Hospital Abuja; and the donation of food items to inmates at Kuje prison.

Alhaji Danu’s philanthropic efforts also extend to the realms of education and the arts. Some notable initiatives include: Awarding scholarships to 146 Jigawa State indigenes, enabling them to pursue their academic aspirations; donating laptops, mobile studios, and financial support to northern artists, promoting cultural development and creativity; and partnering with organizations like the Hypertension Society of Nigeria to raise awareness about critical health issues.

The latest beneficiary is the Jama’atuIzalatilBid’ahWa’iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS) Islamic Centre, Abuja, to which Alhaji Danu donated a furnished 11-room building, worth N150 million, that would serve as the Imam’s residence at the Islamic Centre in the Guzape area of Abuja. Commissioned in May 2025, the philanthropist named it to immortalize his late father, Haladu Danu.

Speaking at the public launch attended by the crème of Nigeria political and religious circles, Danu said one of the greatest acts of worship in Islam is giving and spending for the sake of Allah. He thanked Allah for giving him the means and privilege of doing good deeds for his sake. Danu, in his characteristic humility, noted that it’s a rare privilege for him to commission such a project, adding that he was immensely grateful to the JIBWIS Centre for giving him the opportunity.

Beyond his philanthropic work, the sardaunanDutse /Tafida babban Daura is a strong advocate for national unity. As an active member of the Arewa Consultative Forum, he serves as the Chairman of the Media and Publicity sub-committee, leveraging his platform to promote dialogue and understanding. He has also been instrumental in promoting national unity through musical initiatives, bringing together artists from various regions of Nigeria to foster a sense of unity and cultural exchange. He is a holder of the National Honour of Officer of the Federal Republic, OFR, awarded in 2023 for his meritorious service to the nation.

His leadership and generosity shine through in endeavours that uplift and empower communities, reflecting a deep sense of social responsibility. Today, the suave business man could pass arguably as one of the most charitable billionaires around as his flame of philanthropy appears inextinguishable.

The selection of Alhaji Haladu Danu as The Top10 Magazine’s Man of the Year 2025 is in recognition of his landmark humanitarian gestures and his commitment to touching lives in different ways over the years, especially in the year under review, which clearly stands him out not only as a father of compassion, but Nigeria’s philanthropic leader.

SENATOR OSITA IZUNASO, Chairman, Senate Committee on Capital Market,
Legislator of the Year

The outstanding performance of Senator OsitaIzunaso in the Senate within a very short time makes a strong case for the election of people with experience in the lower chambers and senior government offices into the Senate. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1992 and again in 1999 and served in cabinet and other top positions, before being elected into the Senate in 2023.

Just about two years in the 10th Senate, Senator Izunaso, representing Imo West, has demonstrated remarkable leadership, strategic foresight, and an intentional investment into the progress of his constituency (Orlu zone) and the nation at large. His dual focus on reviving the Nigerian capital markets and addressing the needs of his people underscores his dedication to both national and local development.

As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Markets, and as an informed legislator, he recognized the capital market as a key driver of economic growth; hence, has taken bold steps to rejuvenate this critical sector by championing legislative reforms aimed at increasing investor confidence, promoting transparency in that sector, and enhancing the regulatory frameworks through sponsorship/support of key legislations.

One of his notable achievements includes sponsoring and advocating for the passage of the Investment and Security (Repeal & Re-Enactment) Bill 2024 (SB. 128) which guarantees investor confidence in the capital market. His efforts have also focused on attracting foreign investment by strengthening Nigeria’s financial ecosystem and creating a more business-friendly environment. He has introduced over 13  notable Bills to the Senate,  including the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act (Repeal & Re-enactment) Bill 2023 – September 2023 (SB. 95), and the Constitution (Alteration) Bill 2024 – Oct. 2024 (SB. 580). The latter is the state creation bill which is now into its second reading – with lots of stakeholder engagement ongoing. What started as Orlu state creation, has now changed (by the approval) of the people of the area affected) to “Anim” state – involving all the 12 LGAs in Imo West and some parts of Anambra state.

Senator Izunaso also has 13 motions to his credit apart from the seven he co-sponsored, all of which touch on the welfare of his constituents and Nigeria at large.
One of his motions, “the urgent need to carry out remedial work on Obodoukwu, Urualla, Akokwa, Umumaisiaku, Umuchima and Umueshi gully erosion sites in Ideato North and Ideato South LGAs, Imo state,” led both the state and federal governments to pay attention to the ecological challenges in the area. His audacious motion “Condemning the Disruptive Nature of “SIT-AT-HOME” Demonstrations in the South East-Nigeria” attracted commendations from both Nigerians and foreigners. It also spurred the South East Governors to take a joint decisive action on security in the region.

His motion on the “Need to Investigate the Foreign Exchange Backlog Accumulation, the recent Activities in the Foreign Exchange Market as well as some of the Development Finance Programmes of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2015 to Date” led the Federal Government to the ongoing reforms in the financial sector. His persistent advocacy for the inclusion of Persons with Disability in Nigeria brought about full Implementation of the Disabilities Act.

Beyond his national contributions, Senator Izunaso has remained deeply connected to the people of Imo West, and his representation has been marked by practical interventions in infrastructure, education, Healthcare, and social welfare of the people of Imo West. In the 2024 budget (which is the only one he has operated in the last 18 months), Sen. Izunaso was able to attract a total of 31 projects/programs to improve connectivity, commerce and the general well-being of the people of Imo West. And all these projects/programs are either completed or ongoing. These don’t include direct interventions by him in the areas of economic and infrastructural development projects.

He has been deeply involved in the provision of humanitarian programmes, youth and women empowerment; training and empowerment of 100 women in aquaculture & fish farming, training of youths and women in the 12 Local Government Areas of Imo West Senatorial District on modern cassava processing techniqueswith start-up kits and seed capital; etc.
Senator Izunaso’s representation has been characterized by legislative excellence, grassroots engagement, and impactful development projects.
His ability to bridge the gap between governance and his people has strengthened democratic representation in his constituency.

DR. DAME PATIENCE JONATHAN, Former First Lady of Nigeria
Most Inspirational Woman of the Year

At the height of her fame as Nigeria’s First Lady, the power and influence of Dr. Mrs. Patience Jonathan knew no bounds. Her word carried the weight of law. Her name opened doors. Believed to be very influential, she moved with swagger, dressed and was dotted like a queen.

But even after climbing down from the pinnacle of power on May 29, 2015, Mrs. Jonathan has never been and would probably never be your typical ordinary citizen. Most of the trademarks of high political office, power and influence still follow her.

Yet, she brought herself down to earth, enrolled for a three-year doctorate degree programme, attended classes with students young enough to be her children and submitted herself to the normal stress and pressures of studentship. Earlier this year, Mrs. Jonathan was conferred with a PhD in Psychology, Guidance and Counselling by Ignatius Ajuru University of Education during the institution’s 43rd Postgraduate Convocation Ceremony.

Narrating her experiences after the convocation, the former First Lady recountedher difficult academic journey, frustrating moments, self-doubt and the demands of academic life, particularly the repeated assignments and high expectations from lecturers, which nearly made her abandon the programme. She recalled that at some points, already being a holder of an honorary doctorate degree, she would wonder why she enrolled for another doctorate degree in the first place. “When I went to pick up my PhD form, I thought I would not make it. I said, I have finished my career. I have served as First Lady of Nigeria. What am I going to do with a PhD?” she told the congregation during her testimony in a Church.

Jonathan also spoke about how she was humbled by the effort it took to sit in classrooms with much younger students.

“I would go to class and sit on the bench with my children. I was the ‘Mama’ among them, and I wasn’t ashamed. The teacher would be teaching, I would raise my hand and ask questions because the younger ones would understand immediately, but, as a ‘Mama’, I had to ask questions three times before I understood one thing,” she said.

Jonathan, now 68, described the three-year programme as feeling like “40 years,” and attributed her perseverance to divine support. The former First Lady intended her testimony to serve as a powerful encouragement to others, especially women and youths, so they do not see age or circumstance as a barrier to education.

“There is no age limit in education. If you are a hundred years old, you can make it. If you are ten years old, you can make it. Just be determined, and you will get there,” Jonathan said.

Also speaking at the convocation ceremony, Dr. Jonathan highlighted the transformative power of education, stressing that age should never be a barrier to academic pursuit.

She said,” I feel that no age is too late to achieve your academic dreams, whether you are young or old. If I can do it, you can also do it. I believe that even in retirement, you are not too old to go back to school because education provides the opportunity for one to always refresh his or her brain and learn new things,” she was quoted as saying in a press statement released by her Media Adviser, Chris Okeke. “Let me use this opportunity to encourage Nigerian women and the youth to aspire to become the best of themselves through qualitative education.”

HON. ELDER LEKE ABEJIDE, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Customs Service
Legislator of the Year

In Nigeria, many a legislator use their partisan minority status as an excuse for non-performance. But not Hon. Elder Leke Joseph Abejide, the House of Representatives member representing Yagba Federal Constituency of Kogi State. He is one of the very few members elected on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Yet, he has been flying high on performance, especially in the provision of dividends of democracy for his people. To his people, this is understandable: he had laid a solid foundation of service to them when, as a private business man, he attended to different aspects of his people’s welfare. He has been building on that foundation as a parliamentarian.

Born in 1975 in Alu, Yagba East local Government Area of Kogi state, Hon. Abejide was educated at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and Bayero University, Kano, from where he obtained a Bachelor’s and Masters’ degrees in Economics, respectively.

Hon. Abejide began life in business working with DIVA-ITH-TIC-LTD-STI, Turkey between 2004 to 2007. He later set up his own company, ABYEM INT’L LTD, a private clearing company with impressive mission, vision, accomplishments and good services.

He became a well-known, resourceful and successful entrepreneur and an active member and patron of the Association of Clearing and Forwarding Agents.

Out of his demanding schedules he found a communal responsibility through a non-partisan, Non-Governmental Organization called Leke Abejide Foundation, to serve as an intervention agency in the human needs of his people, especially the less privileged, widows, the elderly and indigent students. Some of his numerous achievements, contribution, and projects include:

The renovation of a health centre in Alu in collaboration with other prominent indigenes of the community; donation of poles for the electrification of Igbo-Ero; paying special allowances to five NYSC members posted to Community High School every year from 2011 to 2017; empowerment of widows from 2014 to date; and the construction of a police station equipped with motorized borehole, generator, fence and other necessary facilities to enhance the security of lives and property in Alu community.

Elder Abejide has been paying school fees from Junior Secondary School to Senior Secondary School in colleges in Alu since 2014. In an unprecedented move, he paid the WAEC fees for all students in public schools in Yagba Federal Constituency, including their administrative charges amounting to over N43Million in 2019/2020.

He has provided uncountable financial and material assistance to almost every one within his community. He has employed over 200 Yagba indigenes in his company alone.

Apparently, in appreciation of his services, the people elected Hon. Leke Abejide in 2019 to the House of Representatives on the platform of little known party, the African Democratic Congress ADC, defeating the candidates of the more popular parties. He was reelected in 2023 and is the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on the Customs Service.

Hon. (Elder) Leke Abejide has become a household name in Kogi politics, highly popular and widely respected. He is reputed for his performance as the Member of the House of Representatives for Yagba Federal Constituency. His record spans across education, road infrastructure, community development, and welfare programmes for the aged and widows. These achievements have earned him loyal supporters.

He is believed to be eyeing a third term in the green side of the National Assembly.

The selection of Hon. (Elder) Leke Abejide as The Top10 Magazine’s Legislator of the Year is in recognition of his exemplary leadership and courageous representation as one of the shinning stars of the 10th National Assembly coupled with his accomplishments in the provision of dividends of democracy to his people which have endeared him to the people of his constituency.
